FEATURED SCHOOL: MARINA VILLAGE MIDDLE SCHOOL
The 2008-2009 school year has been an exciting time at Marina Village Middle School. Students, staff, and families have celebrated milestones and successes as the school community maintains a commitment and focus on continuous improvement in the areas of academic achievement, school climate, and community service.
Academic achievement is an area of tremendous pride. This year, Marina Village celebrates a significant level of growth and improvement on state STAR testing. With an API score of 896, Marina Village is proud to be the highest performing secondary school in El Dorado County. Faculty and staff continue to be dedicated to collaboration and rigorous instruction that supports all students in their academic progress.
Building upon the foundation of a positive school climate has been a cooperative effort among staff and students. Several staff members are participating in a district-wide "Safe Civil Schools" program, designed to reinforce positive behavior on campus. Student leaders are actively developing lunchtime and co-curricular programs that provide positive channels for student energy. Students participate in games and rallies during their lunch periods, plan and host talent shows and school dances, and participate in after school enrichment classes including art, engineering, environmental science, and drama.
The Marina Village National Junior Honor Society, Student Leadership Class, and Social Science Departments set a fantastic example of the value of community service. Last fall, the Honor Society sponsored a "Warm and Fuzzy Drive", collecting blankets, coats, and hats for families in need; and they supported breast cancer awareness and research by collecting Yoplait yogurt lids. Next month, Student Leadership and the Marina Village PTC will co-sponsor a "Buzz Off" head shaving event to raise money for cancer research, in honor of the principal’s son, who is undergoing treatment for a brain tumor. Social Science teachers are also promoting community service through history classes, with students who complete twenty or more hours receiving special recognition at the end of the school year.
With half of the school year complete, Marina Village Middle School looks forward to a busy and exciting Spring 2009.
